The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University seeks an MD/DO/or foreign equivalent, board certified or equivalent anesthesiologist and eligible for a California license or exemption to join the Department as Chief of the Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, with appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in the Medical Center Line, the University Tenure Line, or the Clinician Educator Line.

• The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the Medical Center Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, and scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.
• The predominant criteria for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching.
• The major criteria for appointment in the Clinician Educator Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, teaching, administrative and/or scholarship appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.

Academic rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

The successful applicant should have demonstrated leadership relevant to the field of cardiothoracic anesthesia.

We expect the successful candidate to have developed an academic program relevant to cardiothoracic anesthesia and to collaborate with other departments in the medical school.

The successful applicant will spend a portion of time in clinical cardiothoracic anesthesia.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have board certification or equivalent in anesthesiology and have the training and experience to successfully develop an academic program relevant to the field of cardiothoracic anesthesia.

Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Synopsis:

The division is a leader in the field of Adult Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia (CTA). Closely aligned with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Division of Vascular Surgery, and the Division of Cardiology, the CTA division’s primary goal is to provide first-rate perioperative care to a high-acuity and complex patient population. Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford has a remarkable history, pioneering heart and lung transplantation, thoracic aortic reconstruction, endovascular aortic repair, trans-catheter aortic valve replacement, and mechanical circulatory support.

In 2019, the CTA division moved into a new, cutting-edge facility, which includes seven fully modernized cardiothoracic and vascular operating rooms, three hybrid rooms, one procedure room, as well as a dedicated thirty-bed cardio-vascular intensive care unit (CVICU). The yearly surgical volume has passed 1,400 cases, including highly complex procedures such as multiple valve repairs, aortic surgeries, and multi-organ transplants. The CTA division plays a sentinel role in the CVICU, a closed unit primarily staffed by its faculty.

The CTA fellowship program is among the top programs in the country receiving well over a hundred applications every year. The division is dedicated to a structured, immersive, and diverse educational program using modern didactics. Other important programmatic efforts are high-specialty care, clinical operations, and clinical research. Examples include care in obstetric patients with congenital or acquired cardiopulmonary diseases, work flow optimization with automated data streaming and analysis, clinical trials testing integrated regional anesthesia techniques, and outcomes research using large databases and advanced computational approaches.
